As an adult, I’ve learned how quickly time passes and try each year to find ways to better savor and enjoy this Christmas season. There have been too many years where it passes and we realize that it’s over! It’s a very relatively short season, so we’ve found ways to soak it all in without making it overwhelming or fitting in too much.
So, in case you too are looking for ways to enjoy all the sweet days of this short season, here’s a favorite tradition of ours. The fun thing about this tradition is that it keeps growing every year. Someday I think we will nail it down, and I’d love to hear from you if you do something similar or have any ideas!
our beginning of christmas tradition
It’s a common tradition to get Christmas pajamas every year, I did growing up. Often they’d be gifted on Christmas Eve to wear that evening. As a mama now, I couldn’t understand buying pajamas and only wearing them once, so for our little one’s first Christmas she wore them all season long. They were definitely covered in stains by Christmas, but that’s just fine with me.
This year, as we pulled out all of our Christmas decor, I placed this year’s Christmas pajamas in her stocking to find. It was a fun and easy way to make it an extra special evening. She put them on immediately. We also added in this year gifting a Christmas book at this time too. We got a very special Lionel Polar Express Train to place under the tree so we didn’t want to wait until Christmas to read the book! We now read it most days, and I think we will continue to do this in the future.
our other non-Christmas day traditions
An advent calendar – which we fill with fun activities and scripture readings, see ours here and here
Wisemen & the star – this year we’re starting a fun tradition with Ruby. We’ve heard of many families doing this is in the past. Every day you place the star in a new location, find it, and place the wisemen there. On Christmas, the star is over the nativity. We also picked up this book to help with the concept.
St. Nicolas Day – We’re still not sure where we will end up on the whole Santa thing, but I like the idea of celebrating St. Nicholas Day instead. Do you do this? This is one I didn’t do growing up, so I’m unfamiliar.
What are your beginning of Christmas traditions?

Our Christmas pajamas can be found at Under the Nile, which were graciously gifted to us. They’re made of incredibly soft, organic, Egyptian cotton. We basically have to fight Ruby to get her to change out of them and she’s worn them every night they’re clean.
