This Father’s Day is a special one for my husband as his first as a papa of TWO little girls. So, that means we get to celebrate him twice as much, right?
On top of that, he also is graduating from his medical residency and we are moving this summer to South Korea. In the midst of all of this, he’s constantly thinking of others, his family, his patients, and his country. He’s worked so hard for our family and everyone else that we want to go above and beyond and spoil our favorite man this year. He is so incredibly deserving and I hope he knows just how much we love him.
If you’re unsure of what to get your fathers in your life for Father’s Day, you’re in luck. I’ve put together some different ideas to get you started. I did my best to break it down into the typical dad gift categories to cover all the bases.
This year we surprised Jordan with the Samsung Galaxy S9+ for Father’s Day. He has been in need of a phone upgrade and the new phone came out at the perfect time. I am getting it for him for the Live Translation and Bixby Vision. In July he will begin a year-long tour in South Korea for the AirForce, and this feature alone is why I am choosing the Samsung Galaxy S9+ It will be very resourceful for our time exploring and navigating a foreign country.
We never have a set budget for gifts, more of a budget cap. I like that because some years taking time to put together a homemade or sentimental gift is special. Like, last year I hardly spent anything and made him an adventure photo storybook. Which means I can go big the next time the holiday rolls around, like this year.
modern father’s day gift guide
It’s an everyone thing, but guys especially love all the new tech out there. Like I mentioned earlier, we’re going the tech route for our guy this year.
The new Samsung Galaxy S9+ isn’t just a minor enhancement, it’s amazing how much has changed. Jordan had an older Galaxy and it’s a huge improvement, with the new screen, waterproof, and all the new details. As a photographer, my favorite feature is the mechanical dual aperture that can adjust depending on lighting, and a new super slo-mo feature that automatically creates GIFs from your footage. We took a photo at night and it was incredible how light and bright it was, it even rivaled my DSLR nighttime photos, which is truly impressive. It’s that low aperture that is key.
Thinking of another tech item? Maybe a new speaker, headphones, smartwatch, or smart house equipment might work.
Haven’t heard of a smart house? You can now connect your home with your devices with smart switches. While playing with Jordan’s new phone we discovered that we can connect the phone to our Samsung TV, we are in the future, people.
Ruby had a blast playing around with the AR emojis, this is her own augmented reality of herself with pink glasses. It was actually really, really cool.
clothing and accessories
You can’t go wrong with the age-old Father’s Day gift, a tie, unless of course, your favorite father doesn’t wear a tie. Then, you may want to go another route.
All the men in my life seem to love practical gift. New and nice athletic socks? Shoes? Now we’re talking. A new pair of tennis shoes is often our go-to gift item since he typically needs a new pair each year.
Other clothing or accessory ideas: watch, wallet, nice clean undies (weirdly Jordan absolutely loves new quality boxerbriefs, they’re pricey, so it’s definitely special) a new shirt – possibly a dress shirt, a nice soft t-shirt (think comfort and quality fabrics)
Cologne or a shaving kit is also a great idea. Jordan’s a big fan of those items, because he doesn’t necessarily want to splurge on those for a normal day, but they can last a long time. So some new self-care products, like shaving oil, a fancy razor, or styling cream help to make each following day a little more special.
outdoors, sports, hobbies
If there is one thing my man particularly enjoys it’s the outdoors and sports. I can never ever go wrong with a gift in this category.
Which sport does your guy love? Maybe some new golf balls, tennis balls, really any of the sports balls would do the trick. A new club or tennis racket, perhaps?
Outdoor gifts are a big hit too. A hammock was by far one of my best-gifted items to Jordan. And since then I’ve slowly have been upping his outdoor and camping gear. Some ideas? enamel camping dishes, lifestraw, jetboil or camping stove, a new tent, hiking bookbag or shoes, or maybe a new hat.
What hobbies is he into, or wants to be into? Woodworking, beermaking, photography, or art? Maybe he needs a new tool or a gift card to a store to finish up or start a new project.
A new magazine subscription is also a great gift, Jordan loves the outdoor magazines that he gets monthly.
Last year, I made Jordan a book of adventures he’s been on with Ruby. I took advantage of a free book coupon and only paid shipping. He cherishes this book, and it was fun to do something sentimental for him. Have your little one take charge one year if they’re older and make something. Every year doesn’t need to be big.
Does your guy already have most of the gifts on this list? Maybe say this is an off year, make a card or something homemade, that way you can budget a little more the following Father’s Day. Because man, I know all the gifts my man wants are on the higher side. If your man is like mine, he’d appreciate that so that you can get him a higher quality item later.
A gift doesn’t need to be a tangible item. In fact, some of the best gifts are ones where you get to experience something new, a favorite activity, or just time with your loved ones.
A camping trip, the theatre or movies, a picnic in the park, a hike are all favorites over here.
I hope this helped to share some love with your favorite guys this Father’s Day. Overall, you can’t go wrong if you’re looking for the perfect gift. Remember that guys appreciate good quality, new tech, and comfortability. Don’t forget about experiences! If you need a good last-minute gift, write in a card that you’re going to take them to their favorite restaurant, pay for a round of golf, or take them on a surprise adventure, that’s everything!
I wanted to share with you how we surprised Jordan with his new father’s day gift. We were shopping and he meandered through the phone section and we stopped and told him to pick a phone and “Happy Father’s Day!” He was very shocked, haha! He picked out the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and was pretty excited, especially once he got past the initial shock of the surprise, he definitely wasn’t expecting this! If there was anyone deserving of a new and quality phone, it’s this guy.
Here’s the video of him from when we surprised him:
We were immediately drawn to Infinity display with edge to edge screen sleek look. And there were a few colors to choose from, lilac purple, midnight black, and coral blue.
He’s been playing with it and learning all the new features and now we can’t wait to get over to South Korea because we’re waiting to activate it there to use!
Happy Father’s Day to all of you papa’s out there. You are the real MVP.
