what i’m currently reading
Do you ever have those times when life, which has been going a lightning speed, suddenly slows down? Your teething, always sick, toddler sleeps through the night again. And your always-on-the-go-three-year-old is under the weather and takes a solid nap every day. Oh, and the most unbelievable, your husband the just-out-of-residency ER doc has four days off in a row.
This is my life right now, and I like it. I forgot what free time felt like. How much I can do when I’m not sleep deprived. And in these slower days, I’ve had some extra time and space for one of my favorite hobbies, reading.
I’ve read a book about every day, completely devouring book after book. It also helps that I found my once lost Kindle, and finally figured out how to work my Overdrive account.
Also, to be fair, most of these are audiobooks, which I must say, are my preferred way to read (er, listen) to a book in this season of life. I especially love when they have good narrators, like Reese Witherspoon reading Go Set a Watchman.
here’s what i read in the last week
- Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng
- Cold Tangerines by Shauna Niequist
- Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist
- Rising Strong by Brene Brown
I LOVED Everything I Never Told You, I finished it in a day and was so moved by it. The character development was beautiful and I felt like I knew the family. I’ve been waiting on Little Fires Everywhere forever, so I picked up this one.
Present Over Perfect was a reread. I found the audiobook on hoopla and listened to it again. As a fellow ennegram 7, I relate with Shauna Niequist so much, so I think this will be one I go back to often. I decided to listen to Cold Tangerines as well, which wasn’t quite as good, but I still really related to. I’m glad I listened to the audiobook in the background.
Rising Strong was another reread that I actually never finished. So I skimmed the beginning and finished the rest. I’ve been trying to get through her new book, but actually reading a book and not listening is challenging. I loved this one and her research, I think it’s incredibly valuable. There was one section I rewrote word for word in my journal to carry around with me. Everyone needs to read her teachings on boundaries.
Do you ever go to the library, search for a book, and take it home? I have here and there, but it was definitely unusual at my old library. Now, it seems, best-sellers are on holds for years and years. I was on the waitlist for this book in St. Louis and it never got to me before we left! I was at the library this week and searched for it on the computer (do you remember the old school dewey decimal system) and hunted it down and it was there! It’s times like these that I’m thankful for my tiny library.
Here’s what I’m currently reading:
- Becoming by Michelle Obama
- Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
- Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
- Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
- dare to lead by Brene Brown
- In His Image by Jen Wilkin
I’m thrilled about this lineup. I finally got my hands on Michelle Obama’s book and started reading it immediately in the library. The last few books are all ones that I’ve been attempting to read before my sudden reading spree.
Here’s what’s on my hold list at the library:
I know my reading will slow down in our coming busy months, but I hope to continue to at least read a book or two a week. I feel so inspired when I’m reading and much prefer it to staring at my phone, you know?
If you enjoyed this, I shared my summer reads last year if you’re interested in more good reads.
